Earlier this month, Silver Cross Hospital nurse Barbara Backhus, RN, found herself in the right place at exactly the right time when she helped save the life of a two year old boy. These hands may one day save your life. It began shortly after Barbara left an area nail salon on her day off, which also happened to be the day before her daughter’s wedding. As she was heading to the church for some last-minute details, she saw a frantic mom near Rt. 30 and Cedar Road, attempting to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her toddler son. The child’s face was completely blue, and he was beginning to go limp. I jumped out of my car, told the mother I’m a nurse she said ‘help us’ as she was crying, Barbara explained.

She quickly started performing choking rescue on the young boy, which involves delivering measured blows to the back. Shortly after, a large chunk of banana was dislodged from the child’s mouth, causing him to gasp for air and vomit. When Barbara arrived at the church, she was shaking from the adrenaline rush. My experience in pediatrics and my own mothering instincts kicked in! I felt such joy and relief when the color and life returned to this little boy, just so happy that he was alright! These hands may one day save your life. Backhus reflects on her experience, borrowing a famous quote about heroics. “Save one life and you’re a hero. Save one hundred live and you are a nurse. I love what I do,she adds. Sometimes you’re just placed in a situation at the right time to make a difference.
